Vietnam and Cambodia - Hue

Hello from Hue, central Vietnam, arrived here early today 08.00am after a 1 hour flight from Hanoi ... been up since 02.30, had to leave for the airport at 04.30, flight was at 06.55 .... started the day by visiting a couple of mausoleums, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh Tomb. The weather not so good here, it is the wet season, warm with rain and high humidity. Arrived at the Hotel,(10.45)  The Saigon Morin, a really nice Hotel, overlooking the Perfume River, had an hour to freshen up and then it was out for lunch, at the Phnoc Thanh Garden Restaurant, the menu today was ... Noodle soup with beef, Grilled chopped pork (like meatballs) fried bread with sea food filling, shrimps sautéed with garlic, grilled pork, fish baked in a clay pot, stir fried noodles with vegetables, steamed rice and fried bananas.. (delicious), all washed down .. of course with some local beer. 
The afternoon was for free time, I think most went for a sleep .. I know I did ... 


The hotel presents in the evening a buffet and cultural music show, this was really good, over 30 different types of Vietnamese food to choose from and at a reasonable price $20 ... the main currency here is the Vietnamese Dong ... but US dollars are used everywhere ... rates of exchange are around .. £1 - 32,000 Dong. or $1 - 19,500 ... 


Still in Hue tomorrow, the weather not looking to improve much ....

Best of New Zealand

Kia Ora, Hello again, unfortunately now back home in what is a sunny Stafford, the final few days of the New Zealand trip were spent in the beautiful Bay of Islands,from the 19th - 22nd,  although the weather was not the best, torrential rain and gale force winds .... we did manage to enjoy it. After leaving Auckland we crossed the harbour bridge, and made our way to the Kauri Museum, at Matakohe. Here we had time to experience this fantastic museum, and learn all about the Kauri tree and its uses. The afternoon drive was through a native forest, where we stopped to view the oldest largest of the Kauri trees, Tane Mahuta (the big tree), it is said to be over 2,500 years old, and stands tall in the forest (see pics below).
